Welcome to Mrs.Pope-Moorman's Science Class!
About my class...
My goal as a science teacher is to equip my students with the knowledge of science concepts, scientific reasoning, and the application of science skills to make them successful in the their future career and the navigation of our rapidly evolving technical/scientific world.
This is accomplised by:
1. Building relationships with my students. Students that have a positive relationship with their teacher are more willing to use the relationship to explore the classroom, school, and subject. Students will want to take on academic challenges when they have a positive relationship with their teacher.
2. Engaging students in what they will be learning to increase rigor and academic growth. I use music, demonstrations, student led discussions, props, news clips, articles, classroom staging, movement, and experiential learning to engage students. I strive to give my classroom the "It" factor. This makes challeging work fun for myself and my students. Students are more likely to remember the knowledge if the experience of learning is engaging and fun.
3. Establishing and protecting a "growth mindset" classroom culture. My classroom shall provide structure, discipline, respect, creativity, passion, and enthusiasm all anchored in rigor. Students will be expected to persevere through challenges and know that making mistakes is proof that you are learning. The material will be not be easy, but it will become easier through hard work and determination.
4. Setting high expectations for all students. In my classroom, this is accomplished through talk aspirations and the belief that we are focused more on where the student is going and not where the student currently is. It's all about the best and highest outcomes for the student's future. I often tell them that I want them to have as many opportunities/options as they can possibly have going into college and entering the workforce. I have to set the bar high for them, so they will be prepared to compete with their peers for college scholarships, careers, and as leaders in the community.
